Oklahoma Wednesday

Friends,

Gameday inches closer.  Meaning we have a visit coming from one Mr. Robert (Bob) Stoops.

or anything that happened during the last four minutes, and overtime, of the Fiesta Bowl against Boise State:

How to fail in new and exciting ways: a primer

or when he had to dismiss two of his starters going into the 2006 season due to allegations of fraud:

Oklahoma said that two players had been dismissed by the team but did not identify them. The school said in a statement that the players violated NCAA rules by working at a private business and taking "payment over an extended period of time in excess of time actually worked."
Bomar apparently filed for 40-hour work weeks at a Norman, Okla., auto dealership, making up to $18,000, when he only worked 5 hours a week, Schad reported.

The Bomar, in this case, was OU's starting QB and was on the Heisman watch list of many going into the 2006 season.  Instead, he ended his college career as the subject of a famous gif:

Stoops has learned from his mistakes.  For example, last year he took a starting D. Tackle, benched since August for 'violation of team rules, and reinstated him in the hopes of said cheater annihilating Everett Golson.  And how did that tackle perform?

Some would call this 'room for improvement'.  I call it
'sucking'.

On the bright side, the 2012 game wasn't as embarrassing for Mr. Stoops as his last trip to Notre Dame Stadium.  Mr. Stoops built up a sixteen point lead before losing

in the latter part of the game, to this man:

This man failed at Notre Dame, failed at ESPN announcing, and washed up
coaching the New Mexico State Lobos.  He is also the one of only two men to ever beat
Bob Stoops and Pete Carroll in the same season.

Of course, Mr. Stoops

Has a ways to go before he reaches the pinnacle of bending the rules, skullduggery, and out-and-out cheating established long ago at Oklahoma U by this man, Barry Switzer:

Whose stellar record of violations can be seen below:

1973: Various Violations*
Accusations included boosters providing transportation to recruits, and a Sooner assistant falsifying QB Kerry Jackson’s transcript so he would be eligible (the assistant was not terminated). The NCAA gave OU a TV ban and a bowl game ban. Barry Switzer was on the staff at this time, but was an assistant to head coach Chuck Fairbanks.

1980: Sweating the Small Stuff
Lots of smoke, but not much fire. Switzer mocked the NCAA for prosecuting them in his book, “Bootlegger’s Boy”, but players Charles Thompson and Brian Bosworth reported getting paid well in their respective books.

1988: Switzer’s True Colors Show
Any doubts that Switzer ran a dirty program were dispelled by the NCAA’s report covering 1985 and 1986. Assistant coaches offered envelopes with cash to recruits, cars were provided, bills were taken care of, and game tickets were sold. An internal OU investigation revealed no additional violations. Unfortunately, ex-players and recruits talked, so the NCAA reported additional violations.

OU again investigated and found nothing more. The NCAA sanctioned OU, and informed them that if they fought the sanctions, the NCAA had more they could investigate.
Oklahoma received a three year probation, a two year television ban, and a one year bowl ban. Switzer was fired.
These violations were so heinous that football coaches around the country took note.  One coach cited Switzer as a reason not to retire, quote:

he wasn't ready to retire because if he did, it "would leave college football in the hands of the Jackie Sherrills and the Barry Switzers of the world"

Sadly for the author of this quote, Mr. Switzer's statue still stands on Oklahoma's campus, while statue of the quote's speaker no longer stands outside Beaver Stadium

Oh, the irony of Joe Paterno criticizing someone for running
a dirty program.

Anyway, Go Irish, Beat Sooners.
